More about: Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to any disease of the heart and blood vessels. The most common ones are diseases of the heart muscle, strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and heart disease caused by high blood pressure.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the name for the group of disorders of heart and blood vessels, and include:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Coronary heart disease (heart attack)
  • Cerebrovascular disease (stroke)
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Heart failure
  • Rheumatic heart disease
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Cardiomyopathies1

Heart attack

A heart attack happens when there is a sudden complete blockage of an artery that supplies blood to an area of your heart.2

Heart failure

Heart failure is a condition where your heart isn’t pumping as well as it should be. When your heart is damaged and isn’t pumping properly it can become bigger, weaker, or stiffer. This change in the way your heart is pumping causes extra fluid to build up in your body and sometimes in your lungs.3

Stroke

A stroke, sometimes called a “brain attack” occurs when blood flow to an area in the brain is cut off. The brain cells deprived of the oxygen and glucose needed to survive, die. If a stroke is not caught early, permanent brain damage or death can result.4
